Lunch & Learn: Conducting Inclusive Research and Usability Testing Remotely
April 21 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm
On Tuesday, April 21, we’re hosting a collaborative, open discussion on how a people-first approach to research and testing leads to better insights – putting the ‘us’ in usability testing.
Too often, technology products and services that are meant to improve the lives of everyday people are researched, designed and prototyped entirely behind closed doors. This could lead to biased technology that isn’t built for all users in mind. The key to avoid falling into this trap is to engage everyday people throughout the design process via thoughtful research and testing activities.
Civic Hall Toronto’s sister program, GRIT (Gathering Residents to Improve Technology) Toronto, launched in 2018 to tackle these issues head-on. GRIT Toronto offers services that connect technology creators — including governments, startups and civic tech groups — with diverse and underrepresented communities to elicit feedback on their products and services, and ultimately make them more impactful and accessible.
Due to the COVID-19 situation, GRIT Toronto has successfully pivoted to conducting usability tests remotely. Program Manager Marisa Bernstein will share how this was done, with tips on creating a supportive environment from afar.
Since all of our events will be taking place online for the foreseeable future, we’re opening some of them up to the public – including this one!
Join us to learn how to adopt a truly inclusive (and remote) approach to user research and usability testing activities for your work.
This Lunch & Learn will be taking place over Google Meet – the link will be provided upon registration. Please note that this session may be recorded.
